Measles Outbreak in Bangladesh Claims 1,147 Lives; Global Health Alert Issued as Cases Surge in the US

DHAKA: A devastating measles outbreak has swept across Bangladesh, claiming at least 1,147 lives and triggering emergency health responses across the region. According to official data from the World Health Organization (WHO), between March 2026 and October 9, 2026, the country recorded roughly 202,000 suspected cases of measles, with 22,000 confirmed via laboratory testing.

Tragically, children under the age of five account for 94 percent of all recorded fatalities. In response to the crisis, Bangladeshi health authorities, in coordination with UNICEF and the WHO, have launched a massive emergency vaccination campaign targeting vulnerable pediatric populations.

Vaccination Gaps Fuel the Epidemic

Public health experts emphasize that halting community transmission of measles requires a sustained vaccination coverage rate of at least 95 percent. However, routine immunization programs in Bangladesh suffered severe disruptions throughout 2025 due to political unrest and administrative bottlenecks, leading to sharp declines in coverage.

Professor Mark Jit, a vaccine advisor to the WHO, warned that the outbreak serves as an urgent alarm beyond Bangladesh’s borders, cautioning that nations with fragile healthcare infrastructures remain exposed to similar resurgences.

US Cases Hit Three-Decade High

The resurgence of measles is not confined to developing nations. In the United States, measles infections in 2026 reached their highest level in three decades. Data through October 2026 reveals more than 4,410 confirmed cases nationwide, with Pennsylvania emerging as the primary hotspot after reporting over 1,200 infections.

Health officials noted that approximately 96 percent of infected individuals in the US were unvaccinated, having missed the standard MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccine.

Key Symptoms of Measles

Measles is a highly contagious, airborne viral infection. Primary symptoms typically include:

 * High Fever: Sudden body temperature spikes reaching up to 105°F (40.5°C).

 * Respiratory Issues: Persistent dry cough and runny nose (coryza).

 * Eye Irritation: Red, watery, and light-sensitive eyes (conjunctivitis).

 * Koplik’s Spots: Small white lesions forming on the inner lining of the cheeks inside the mouth.

 * Characteristic Rash: Red or purplish maculopapular rash that typically starts along the hairline and behind the ears before spreading across the face, trunk, and limbs.
